BCA Stash 40L Backpack Review for Backcountry Skiing and Splitboarding
If you spend any time in the backcountry, you already know your backpack can either make the day smooth… or absolutely miserable. After putting the Backcountry Access (BCA) Stash 40L Backpack through real backcountry ski and splitboard days, I can honestly say this pack has earned its place as my go-to. It’s built specifically for skiers and snowboarders, keeps gear organized without overcomplicating things, and has a few standout features that make a long day in the mountains way more enjoyable. Here’s my full breakdown of what works, what doesn’t, and whether the BCA Stash 40 is the right pack for your backcountry setup.

Three Ways to Carry Your Skis or Snowboard
One of the standout features of the Stash 40 is its versatile board and ski carry options. You can carry your skis or snowboard in three different ways:
-
Diagonal carry – perfect for angled storage on your back.
-
Vertical carry – ideal for snowboarders or when space is tight.
-
A-frame ski carry – for more traditional ski transport.
There’s even a handy cord and top red tab that secures your skis so they stay put while you hike up the mountain. For snowboarders, the vertical carry also works with a removable helmet sling that clips right onto the top.
Organized Gear Storage
The front compartment features a dedicated tool panel to hold your shovel, probe, and skins, keeping avalanche gear separate and easy to reach. Inside the pack, you’ll find:
-
Internal mesh pockets for small essentials
-
Key clips
-
Large main compartment with a U-zip back panel access (my personal favorite—makes digging through the pack a breeze)
-
Inner top drawcord cinch closure
-
Multiple zippered pockets for snacks, carabiners, or headlamps
The Stash 40 even integrates with BCA Link radios through the padded shoulder straps and keeps hydration tubes warm so your water doesn’t freeze on cold days.
Comfort & Fit
The Stash 40 is built for long days in the backcountry. It features:
-
Padded, insulated shoulder straps with zippered pockets
-
Adjustable waist belt with two sizable zippered pockets for snacks or quick-access gear
-
High-adjustable torso length (fits torsos 18–21")
-
Internal frame keeps the load stable and helps the pack ride close to your back
Compared to other packs, the Stash 40 is longer rather than wider, which keeps it comfortable over your board or skis without sticking out too much.
Extra Features
Other thoughtful touches include:
-
Dual ice axe carry points
-
Helmet carry system (removable or top-mounted)
-
Expandable top lid for extra storage or gear
-
Waterproofing that handles snow well
-
Riveted drainage in wet compartments to prevent moisture buildup
- Love the bright orange color, nice safety touch
This pack even has enough space to squeeze in a z-fold foam pad or tent poles if you’re on an overnight adventure.
What Could Be Improved
No pack is perfect, and the hood system on the Stash 40 can be a little tricky. The cinch hood sometimes pops open when fully loaded, which could let in a little moisture in heavy snow. The bottom diagonal ski strap isn’t adjustable beyond a certain point, so very wide skis may be a snug fit.
These are minor complaints, though—they don’t take away from the pack’s overall usability.
Overall Thoughts
The BCA Stash 40L Backpack is a sleek, versatile, and highly functional pack for anyone venturing into the backcountry. Its multiple ski and snowboard carry options, excellent organization, and comfortable fit make it a go-to for day trips or longer missions. While the hood system has a few quirks, this pack delivers everything you need to carry your gear efficiently and safely.
If you’re a skier or snowboarder looking for a reliable backcountry pack that doesn’t overcomplicate things, the Stash 40 is worth checking out.
